Dear Parents, self-confidence begins at birth and continues to develop throughout early childhood. Because it has a significant impact on a person’s life, it deserves thoughtful support from the very beginning.

I Can Do It

Self-confidence is a fundamental area of development that begins at birth and is strengthened in early childhood through support, experience and age-appropriate responsibility.

What does self-confidence mean?

A child’s ability to recognize their own strengths and skills, express themselves in new environments and show willingness to try are important signs of self-confidence. Secure relationships, experiences of success and feedback from adults all shape this process.

What do we observe in children with strong self-confidence?

  • They are more willing to make age-appropriate decisions.
  • They approach new experiences more openly and do not immediately give up when challenged.
  • They express their feelings, thoughts and needs more comfortably.
  • Over time, they learn to see mistakes and feedback as part of the learning process.

How can we support self-confidence at home?

Notice small successes

Direct praise toward effort and patience, not only outcomes, so the child can recognize the value of their own work.

Create space for independence and responsibility

Age-appropriate tasks such as choosing clothes, helping set the table or putting away toys strengthen the feeling of “I can do it.”

Allow room for mistakes

When an attempt does not work, ask questions that help the child think rather than immediately providing the solution. This develops both problem-solving and resilience.

Be a positive role model

When adults acknowledge their own mistakes and try again, they provide a powerful learning model. It is also important to focus on the child’s own growth instead of comparisons.

Help them talk about feelings

Open questions such as “How do you feel?” and calm language that names emotions help children understand themselves and communicate more comfortably.

Ideas for everyday life

  • Create an “I Can Do It” corner at home to display your child’s work.
  • Play mirror games where the child introduces themselves and names qualities they like about themselves.
  • Create pictures, collages and small posters about confidence.
  • Create stories about emotions and achievements using photos.
  • Use puppets and role play to act out scenarios about courage and finding solutions.

Support with books

Age-appropriate children’s books about self-awareness, courage to try and confidence can make this topic a natural part of everyday life.

Self-confidence grows through love, experience, patience and support. Giving children opportunities to do what they are capable of, noticing small steps and leaving room to try again are some of the most valuable parts of the process.
